Upon your arrival in Bordeaux, at the train station or the airport, we will transfer you to your first hotel in St Emilion, where your trip package will be waiting for you. At the end of the afternoon, our Trip Manager will call to introduce themselves and to go over any questions you have. Dinner this evening is included.
Your walk today takes you to the caves of Ferrand, by the immense Dordogne River Valley. These caves, carved into the rock near the Chateau de Ferrand, were created by one of the owners 300 years ago, as an exact model of caves described in a popular novel at the time that he loved. After your explorations, continue through vineyards and past chateaux (Chateau Ferrand, Chateau Laroque, Chateau Le Prieuré, …) en route back to St Emilion. Pass through the pretty village of St Christophe des Bardes with its 12th century church and the covered well "tower" in front of the town hall.
The morning will be spent on a half-day walk, looping through some of the most prestigious and beautiful chateaux of the region around St Emilion: Chateau Ausone, Chateau Canon (with its beautiful gardens), and La Madeleine. Return to town in time for a late lunch at one of the many restaurants, and perhaps the regional macaroons for dessert, and then spend some time this afternoon exploring St Emilion itself. St Emilion, a UNESCO World Heritage listed town, is worth some wanderings; don’t be late for your tour of the underground monuments, with the monumental church carved out of the stone as a highlight.
After a final breakfast in St Emilion this morning, we transfer you to Bergerac. A beautiful and easy going loop walk awaits, along the banks of the Dordogne River, and bringing you back into the town of Bergerac, famous as the namesake of Cyrano de Bergerac, an incredible popular play written by the French author Rostang, and more recently converted into a award-winning movie starring Gerard Depardieu. We leave you time at the end of the day to explore the charming town, with its lovely Renaissance buildings and unusual tobacco museum. Dinner included this evening.
Your walk today takes you northeast of Bergerac, through a wine region called the “Pecharment” in the heart of the périgord. These red wines, made from an assemblage of cabernet franc, merlot, and cabernet sauvignon for the most part, are rich and hearty, well-structured, with big tannins. Your walk takes you through a mix of vineyards and lovely small villages typical if the périgord, where you risk seeing walnut groves and thick forest as well, and before returning you to Bergerac, where you can do some tasting if you feel like it.
Today’s walk takes you southwards from Bergerac and the banks of the Dordogne, into rolling countryside and vineyards. Your goal is the beautiful town of Monbazillac. The 16th century chateau of the same name, combines medieval military architecture with early Renaissance style. The historic building is today owned by the town’s wine co-operative, and as well as visiting the chateau, you can stop for a tasting of the famous sweet Monbazillac dessert wine, as well as other local wines such as Bergerac or again Pécharment. Afterwards, the route takes you back to Bergerac for your final evening.
After a final breakfast, you’ll be able to get train connections out of Bergerac for your further travels. Bon Voyage!
