Day 2 :The “Route des Chateau” 40 km
Your first ride, one of the prettiest, also takes you past some of the greatest names of wine in the world: Margaux, Ste Estephe, Moulis,... Tastings await if you wish! Make your way along the pretty estuary of the Medoc to your charming bed and breakfast, where you will enjoy dinner tonight.
Day 3 : Vineyards reflected in the River 53 km
WThe ride this morning starts amongst small villages filled with history, as well as vineyards. Pass by the impressive Castle of Castera, or the Vertheuil Abbey, or the Fort of Medoc, before returning into prestigious vineyard names, as you ride by Pauillac, the capital of the Medoc, and the nearby chateaux of Latour and Lafite Rothschild. The day ends in a luxurious bed and breakfast, with another delicious dinner, served by your hosts.
Day 4 : To the end of the Estuary 55 km
TYour ride today changes completely. As you ride the length of the Medoc Estuary, right to its point, you pass port villages and wilder terrain filled with sea birds and fishing ports. We recommend stops to soak up the ambiance, and take photos from the panorama of the Richard lighthouse.
At last at the point of the estuary you board a boat with your bikes, and cross over to the mainland, enjoying the views of the cliffs of Meschers and Royan, your goal for the night.
We leave you to choose from the many restaurants of Royan this evening.
Day 5 : Along the Clifftops 35 km
Royan deserved some meandering this morning. A spa town for over two centuries, Royan is exceptional for its physical setting, with long sandy beaches and pine forest in behind, as well as for its Beele Epoque and more modern architecture. Our ride leaving the town passes in front of some of the prettiest villlas. From there, the route follows the estuary along the top of the cliffs; the views are exceptional today. As you head southwards, you enter another winemaking region, that of the Charentes, with their Pineau de Charentes, their Cognac production, and their white wines. Mortagne-sur-Gironde, perched above the Gironde Estuary on white cliffs, is your home for the evening. Dinner included tonight.
Day 6 : The Charentes: Pineau and Cognac 40 km
You distance yourself from the estuary today and head inland, through the productive fields of grapes, sunflowers, and windmills. The villages and towns are charming, filled with 18th and 19th century bourgeois homes, built during the boom of the Cognac production. The end of the day has you loop back towards the estuary, and back into the Bordeau wine region, riding along the Cote de Blaye and Cote de Bourg. Dinner included tonight.
Day 7 : Flowered Roads to Bourg/Gironde 55 km
From your bed and breakfast ride into the town of Blaye and explore its beautiful Citadel, built by Vauban, as well as the spectacular view over the estuary. Your ride takes you amongst palm trees and fragrant flowers into Bourg sur Gironde, one of the prettiest villages of the region. You also pass a prehistoric cave along the way, with remarkable cave paintings. At last arrive at your final Bed and Breakfast for the night. Dinner included.
Day 8 : Departure - Bon Voyage!
